Connect the Dots....
What a "Vo-Cabala-ry!"
"Henry and Dovid immediately hooks the intellectually curious viewer....The sight of this radical Jewish James Dean/Jerry Garcia, with locks of white curly hair bouncing from side to side, standing next to a pristine Big Sur spring with eagles flying overhead, is surreal.
"While Krafchow elucidates mystic ancient passages, Bedar's camera pans the natural beauty of Big Sur's towering redwood forests and 300-foot cliffs. Bedar also provides close-ups of Krafchow's Tarot card table readings. In the documentary, he interprets the cards of a 27-year old woman. "Your understanding of your sexuality is still evolving," he tells her.
"Krafchow explores the similarities between Tarot and Cabala; the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet and the number of Tarot symbols are the same (22). Nothing is a coincidence to Krafchow....Society has a way of manifesting its subconscious sexual attitudes."

The words expressed by "Ted," who was on staff at the Henry Miller Library, after Dovid Krafchow's filmed experience at the Library:
To 'review' a book is to say, "I read it and here is what I think". Dovid
Krafchow's Listening to the Soul is a little more than a book and a lot
more than a 'read'. Part story, part reference and part esoterica might be
a way to characterize it and so would the words, 'accessible, comprehensive
and engaging' but, again, these are mere words. It would be like trying to
describe the author, whom I have had the pleasure of meeting several times
now. Is he a mystic? a scholar? a madman? a storyteller? a prophet? a hippy? a protester? a poet?
In a world that demands 'criticism' and 'characterization', 'classification'
or 'value judgements' I would only say, for the sake of a pithy quote or
sound-bite, that 'The tarot comes full circle and back from the dark with
this publication'. But in the synchronistic and mysterious world of mystery
that Dovid inhabits, I can only urge the reader to get the book and read,
reread and refer. Approach this like you would the Talmud; question, query
and quest as you randomly open it's pages. Put out your deck and compare,
contrast to your own understanding and let it speak. See how the ancients
speak across centuries of syncretism and hidden knowledge. Marvel at what
has transcended and what is recovered.
A certain Baal Shem Tov would go to a special place in the woods whenever he
needed to divine a difficult question. He would carefully construct a special fire, recite special prayers and do specific meditations and soon
the answers came.
His student, Maggid of Meseritz when necessary would go to that same
sacred place. He no longer could build the special fires or remember the
meditations but he would recite the prayers and the answers would come.
The Maggid passed on and was replaced by his student, Moshe Leib of
Sassov, who would say, "I don't remember the fires or the meditations and, lo,
I don't even know the prayers but when I come to this sacred place, the
answers still come."
When Moshe passed on he left his calling with Isreal of Rishin, who would
say to his students, "I don't remember the fires, the meditations, the prayers or even where this sacred place was but if tell this story, the answers surely still come...
And so the story goes. And what does this have to do with Dovid of Woodstock? Turn around. Turn the card. Turn the page. Listen to your Soul...
In the summer of 2004, Thread & Spirit, the indigenous arts gallery and spiritual learning center that was co-directed by Dovid Krafchow and his son, Moshe, closed its doors. I had the privilege of helping in small ways with setting up the store. I have never known a store in any city that was as potent a combination of product quality, atmosphere, and integrity. The purest frankincense available was frequently burning, and the walls featured ancient books, authentic indigenous art, and clear explanations of the interconnections between the sacred wisdom and the global artifacts featured. People would come each Tuesday and Thursday to Dovid's weekly classes, sitting on the floor, propped up by handwoven Turkish pillows. Moshe, who herculeanly managed the store aspects, would videotape Dovid's classes for posterity. It is a mystery to me why more people did not shop at Thread and Spirit.
I know that today, although Thread and Spirit has been dissolved, Dovid and Moshe continue to be open to new outlets for spreading the ancient teachings that Dovid conveys. Environ-MENTAL Productions gladly will take inquiries concerning access to Dovid, Moshe, and the recorded materials, in addition to this documentary, Henry and Dovid: Sex, God, and Revolution in Their Vo-Cabala-ry.
